Joburg Market scoops two awards for excellent people management
The two IPM trophies awarded to Joburg Market Executives
The Joburg Market scooped two new awards at the 53rd Annual Institute of People Management (IPM) Convention held on Tuesday the 3rd November 2009 at Sun City, Pilanesburg in North West Province.
The awards were in recognition of Joburg Market’s excellent contribution to people management in South Africa.
The Joburg Market CEO, Kgosientso Ramokgopa was crowned the IPM CEO of the year and Sello Mashilwane, the Shared Services Executive received the IPM HR Director of the year award.
In total there were four award categories. The other two, which the Joburg Market did not enter, were the HR Practitioner of the Year and HRD Practitioner of the Year.
IPM exists to provide appropriate, relevant knowledge and information on effective leadership and people management to human resource professionals and management in general.
The 2009 IPM Annual Convention was designed with the objective of assisting business leaders to manage and lead their organisations successfully under the emerging economic order.
In a relatively uncertain year that affected most sectors, the Joburg Market is recording significant growth, highlighting the company’s amazing resilience despite the recessionary woes.
Established on the present site at City Deep in 1974, the Joburg Market is the largest of its kind in the country, and in all of Africa. It is wholly owned by the City of Johannesburg and is a commission market where producers deliver their produce to Market Agents who then sell the produce to buyers.
The Joburg Market serves thousands of farmers from across South Africa who sends their fresh produce to the Market to be traded on a daily basis via accredited Market Agents. Currently, about 15 000 farmers make use of this distribution channel.
The large buyer base – averaging about 9 000 at any given time and comprising of retailers, wholesalers, exporters, processors, informal traders and those buying for household consumption – make this market the ideal venue for the trade in fresh produce.
