Joburg Market donation makes the World Food Day a success
Food mountain built with food parcels and fresh vegetables received from donors
The 16th of October was World Food Day. World Food Day is an international event that is celebrated annually to mark the anniversary of Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).
This year marked the 29th anniversary of the World Food Day and in South Africa the event was celebrated in Giyani, Limpopo Province. The event celebration was aimed at heightening public awareness of the world food problem and at strengthening solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.
The event featured the building of a food mountain with food parcels and fresh vegetables that were later distributed to more than three thousand food insecure people from all corners of the province.
Given the messages preached in 2008 with regard to International Year of Potato (IYP), the Joburg Market in conjunction with Potato South Africa and two market agencies, namely Wenpro and Botha ‘n Roodt, contributed in the building of the food mountain with a donation of 360 bags of 10kg potatoes.
IYP was United Nations initiative aimed at addressing issues of hunger and poverty and highlighting the importance of potato as a food source and economic enabler.
Overall, the event was a success with villagers being the main beneficiaries of the food mountain which was dominated mainly by the potatoes.
