Joburg Market goes green
In line with company policy to reduce the Carbon Footprint and Energy Use, the Joburg Market has installed ECUBE devices throughout its cold storage facilities. Following the installation of the ECUBES, the Market has seen savings of more than 150 000 kWh and 150 tons of CO2. It is estimated that the savings will reach almost 800 tons within the first year. ECUBES are recommended for any business that is serious about reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
The installation of ECUBES is part of the Joburg Market ongoing strategy to reduce waste and damage to ozone layer. Currently, the Joburg Market business operation sees less than 1% wastage on fresh produce that enters the facility. Feasibility study is being conducted to convert current wastage into currency by generating electricity out of waste.
Other measures includes optimal reclamation of packaging waste. To this end, two sorting centres have been set up at the Market's premises, both of which act as reclamation points for packaging waste. The one centre is intended for the recovery of used packaging from the Market while the other one is an empowerment project run in conjunction with a leading paper manufacturer and is intended for reclamation of card board material waste for recycling.
