Joburg Market drums up support for Bafana Bafana
Joburg Market stakeholders showing excitement for the country for the hosting of 2010 FIFA World Cup™
Joburg Market was the next stop for the Unite Mzansi Unite (UMU) event campaign. UMU is an adidas initiative aimed at giving all South Africans an opportunity to unite behind the country for the hosting of 2010 FIFA World Cup™ by signing a giant Bafana Bafana 2010 FIFA World Cup™ jersey carried on a truck.
The event took place at the Joburg Market premises in City Deep on 23 March 2010 and featured various engaging activities including playing football, competitions and giveaway of instant prizes.
Joburg Market CEO, Kgosientso Ramokgopa says the event helped ignite the spirit of “Football Fridays” and the “Fly the South African Flag” amongst our stakeholders.
Blowing their vuvuzelas and wearing Bafana Bafana jerseys, with some flying the national flag and face painted in the national flag colours as a symbol of the country’s pride and unity, over 2 400 people turned up to sign the Bafana Bafana jersey and pledge support for the country for the hosting of 2010 FIFA World Cup™.
“Through the event, we managed to raise excitement and pride amongst our various stakeholders about our country’s hosting of the prestigious 2010 FIFA World Cup™”, says Ramokgopa.
With Joburg chosen to be the host for the opening and closing matches for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, it is anticipated that Joburg Market will serve as hub for many participants in the hospitality industry from where fresh produce would be procured for the duration of the soccer tournament.
Ramokgopa says, “The 2010 FIFA World Cup™ will be hosted on African soil for the very first time and Joburg will be the first city in the continent to host a FIFA World Cup™ game. Our responsibility as the Joburg Market is to ensure that the tournament is held under a food secure environment and that the nutritional needs for the plethora mass of football supporters who will descend on our city are met”.
