An Overview of the market
The Joburg Market is a commission market that is open to all the country's producers who send in excess of 980 000 tons of fresh produce to the Market each year to be sold to thousands of market buyers.
This trade realises a turnover of more than R3,2-billion a year. Producers have a choice of sending their produce to any one of the 14 Market Agencies at the Market to sell the produce to willing buyers on their behalf. The market charges the producer a mere 5% commission on all sales made on the commission floor. The commission floor is where actual trading takes place between buyers and market agents acting on behalf of producers.
All sales of produce on the Market have to take place via the commission system. The Market agents in turn levy a negotiable 7,5% commission on the sale price from the producers for their services.
