Introduction
Joburg Market – Johannesburg´s premier food hub
The Joburg Market (formerly known as the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market) is a major centre for the marketing of fresh produce in South Africa and all of Africa.
This remarkable market is located in City Deep, only 5km south of Johannesburg’s central business district and 26km from OR Tambo International Airport. The Market can easily be accessed from the main freeways, drawing the largest concentration and diversity of buyers from all over the country and the continent particularly neighbouring countries such as Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, Zambia, DRC Congo, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
Established on the present site in 1974, some 60% of the vast 63-hactare property has now been developed. The three sales halls utilised for vegetables, fruit and potatoes and onions measure a total of 65 000m².
The award-winning Joburg Market is a commission Market where producers deliver their produce to Market Agents who then sell the produce to buyers. The Market makes a 5% non-negotiable commission on the selling of all fresh produce, while Market Agents earn a negotiable 7,5% commission on the selling price of all fresh produce.
As value-adding services, there are 55 cold rooms which can accommodate 4 561 pallets of fresh produce, while 50 banana ripening rooms can handle 1 590 pallets of bananas at any one time.
The Joburg Market currently trades only in fruit and vegetables, but has laid plans to turn the Market into a comprehensive market, or FoodHub, selling a wide range of fresh produce including meat, poultry and fish.
In addition, the Market is working towards a 2010 vision, a strategy that will create a ‘Market of the Future’ through a R300-million investment in the refurbishment of Market infrastructure. This Market of the Future will utilise new state-of-the-art technology and modern warehouse facilities that will dramatically increase the quality of produce sold.
